Position Overview

As a Sales and Use Tax Consultant, you will work as a trusted advisor with clients who are being audited by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Your work will include gathering and reviewing documentation, researching issues, completing detailed calculations and preparing and organizing documentation for review by the taxing authority. Responsibilities and Capabilities (Proficiencies)

Key responsibilities and capabilities could include but are not limited to,

  • Prepare the client with a pre-audit that assists them with gathering the appropriate documentation, assessing their situation and advising of exposure and educating the client on changes they need to make going forward
  • Work with the auditor to assist them in understanding the business and the applicable tax laws
  • Work with the client to provide additional documentation as needed throughout the audit
  • Liaison with the auditor to alleviate the client’s stress associated with working with auditors
  • Proactively and effectively represent the client in their audit
  • Advocate for the client’s rights and the appropriate application of tax law
  • Ensure the auditor follows proper procedures and policy
  • Negotiate payment plans and penalty and interest waivers
  • Review documentation and research issues
  • Work with raw data to complete calculations
  • Draft filings, such as petitions for redetermination, refund claims, and various other administrative replies
  • Handle and draft responses to notices and communications from tax authorities
  • Respond to client or prospective client inquiries regarding sales tax obligations
  • Research applicable tax law to support client’s position on issues

Sales Tax Audit Practice

  • Knowledge of how to develop, deploy and manage a sales tax audit engagement
  • Knowledge of the theories, principles and practices of sales tax auditing
  • Knowledge of the statutory requirements of Texas state sales tax calculation and remittance
  • Ability to independently interpret and apply knowledge of sales tax laws and regulations
  • Ability to analyze and understand governmental regulations and their practical impact
  • Knowledge and understanding of applicable governance, risk, and control appropriate to the organization
  • Knowledge of sales tax fraud practices and strategies
  • Knowledge of recent changes to industry, regulatory and professional standards
  • Ability to research tax laws and manage tax planning projects to minimize clients’ tax liability and ensure compliance
  • Skill in maintaining client confidentiality 24/7


  • Knowledge of QuickBooks and/or other accounting software
  • Ability to independently use applicable technology to perform the auditing/accounting function
  • Skill in utilizing tax research methods, research resources and web-based tax research search engines
  • Skill in utilizing MS Excel including ability to create and manipulate data in spreadsheets, create pivot tables, V-lookups and perform complex calculations
  • Skill in utilizing MS Word to draft professional reports, client communication, letters, etc.
  • Skill in utilizing MS Outlook email, calendaring and task management functions
  • Skill in utilizing MS Windows to create file folders, sub-folders, search for documents, etc.
  • Skill in utilizing the Internet for research, i.e. browser navigation, Google Advanced Search functions, etc.
  • Skill in utilizing a PC and laptop including ability to troubleshoot and resolve basic operating issues

  • Bi-lingual English and Spanish verbal and written fluency is a plus


Required Education

  • BA/BS degree in Accounting from an accredited university required
  • Master’s degree in Accounting from an accredited university preferred
  • CPA preferred


Required Experience

  • One to three years of audit- or tax-related experience required
  • One to three years general accounting experience with tax reporting experience
  • One to three years experience dealing with tax audit processes and government auditors preferred
  • Public accounting experience preferred
  • Other accounting and auditing experience is desirable


Physical, Travel and Other Requirements

  • The ideal candidate must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
  • Must have transportation to and from work locations throughout the assigned region and Dallas as requested without notice to participate in internal and external client meetings, training sessions, client lunches, etc. as requested
  • Must be able to travel irregularly up to up to 30% of the time, including travel to client locations and professional networking events (local, state, and national) is required, including ability to travel and work weekends as needed
  • Must maintain a valid Texas driver’s license and have reliable transportation
  • Must be able to pass annual background checks and submit to random drug testing
